According to insurmountable sources, piercings, especially in the ear primarily, have been around since 2500 BC and have been worn not only by women, but by men as well all around the world including William Shakespeare and Julius Caesar. As body piercings become increasingly popular in modern culture, it has brought many researchers to the realization that this trend is a tragic insight into an individual’s psyche as well as their physical being and opportunities in the workplace even though it’s seen as a way to express one’s self. Socially and economically, body piercings, among other forms of body modifications, have not only benefited individuals but may also be quickly destroying them. For example, the mummified body dating back to 5,000 years old may have participated in a primitive tribe that held to beliefs in the magical powers of piercings to warn off evil spirits and demons which entered through the ears but could be repelled by metal. Other studies indicate that sailors also wore piercings according to superstitions that it would improve eyesight and keep them safe while traveling at sea (Laura). A single earring could also pay for a burial if a sailor s body washed up along shore. Similarly, piercing has many interpretations today, especially when it comes to self-expression or as a puberty ritual which explains the increased growth in piercings among adolescents (Laura). Consequently, however, this has pushed for further research into why piercings are resulti ng in such exponential growth as the years pass.
